Purpose and Scope of Position

The Yellowknife Association for Community Living is a nonprofit organization providing services to clients with intellectual disabilities and their families, helping them to live meaningful lives in supportive communities.

This position is intrinsic to the operation of the Skills Training & Community Inclusion Service. The facilitator is part of a team providing support, guidance and experiential learning opportunities to adults with intellectual disabilities who have communication and behavioral challenges. The service focus is employment-based skill development, life skills development, and community inclusion. Clients gain skills by completing community and business service contracts, and participating in literacy programming and life skills training. Through these experiences, clients improve their skill level, work towards achieving personal goals, and experience increased inclusion in the community.

Reporting Relationship

Reports to Manager, Skills Training & Community Inclusion Service

Key Responsibilities

  1. Works cooperatively with other staff to develop programming to meet the client’s needs as identified in goal plans and case management meetings
  2. Builds relationships with clients and assists those clients in identifying programming options to meet their employment, educational, social and personal goals

  2. Researches and recommends to Skills Training & Community Inclusion Manager cooperative planning activities that promote employment, participation in the community, address the needs and goals of the clients, strengthen social and community awareness and address safety issues;
  3. Supervises clients during programming
  4. Assists clients with personal care and hygiene needs;
  5. Prepares written reports of client goal plans, planning and other reports as required
  6. Ensures that the needs and rights of the client are of prime importance in all decisions
  7. Other duties as assigned to meet the needs of the clients, Skills Training & Community Inclusion Service, and the Yellowknife Association for Community Living.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Knowledge of and skilled at providing support to clients with disabilities while increasing their inclusion and skill development
  • Knowledge of case management, assessment, development and implementation of individual goal plans
  • Understanding of personal boundaries and the necessary assertiveness to maintain and enforce boundaries
  • Ability to communicate with clients with intellectual disabilities
  • Ability to adjust support methods to meet the needs of clients and to increase skill and participation
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work cooperatively and professionally as part of a team and to work with other agencies and community partners
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong conflict resolution and crisis intervention skills
  • Basic computer skills including word processing and electronic mail
  • Ability to show initiative, flexibility, and practicality
  • Knowledge of and the ability to work with clients of varying cultural backgrounds
  • Ability to speak multiple languages in support of clients
