Position Title:           Coordinator, Skills Training and Supported Employment

Report to:                  Manager, Skills Training and Supported Employment

Purpose and Scope of the Position

Inclusion NWT is a non-profit organization providing services to individuals with intellectual, developmental and other disabilities and their families, assisting them in living meaningful lives in supportive communities.

The Coordinator is responsible for supporting the effective delivery of Skills Training and Supported Employment services that offer meaningful support and assistance to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities/brain injury as they work toward achieving their employment and skills development potential.  Every effort is made to provide support that reflects the specific needs of each individual and to continuously re-evaluate that support to ensure it is appropriate for each client.

Skills Training and Supported Employment works with each individual to help them maximize their potential to contribute to the economy and community through paid employment, contract services and volunteer opportunities. Services include

  • employment skill development through one-to-one job coaching and small group instruction and modelling
  • opportunities for employment, education, and social involvement in the community
  • Support for specific community-based positions in the workforce (paid and volunteer)
  • Practical social skills development through one-to-one real-life situations and activities
  • literacy skills development through one-to-one and small group instruction
  • transition support of students with intellectual/developmental disabilities from the education system to adult learning and employment choices.

The Coordinator supports all staff to ensure the consistent application of a philosophy that supports the independence of each client by not doing for them but doing with them.  Each client is encouraged to participate in all facets of community engagement, skills improvement and worklife to the extent that they are able.

The Coordinator also works closely with other Inclusion NWT staff to provide the best fit of services and consistency for client service.

Key Responsibilities

1.         Direct Service

The Coordinator assists the Manager with the delivery of supports for all clients assisted by Skills Training and Supported Employment including:

Employment Skill Development – providing training on the job, job coaching, and supervision on employer’s job sites based on the individual’s needs to promote community inclusion in the workforce.

Business Services – helping clients learn employment skills with staff support in  paid contract areas such as recycling, paper shredding, poster distribution, yard work, snow shoveling and mail and courier routes. 

Social Skill Development – identifying areas of social challenge and working with the individual in modifying, remedying or removing things which get in the way of interacting with others outside of Inclusion NWT and giving them additional tools to communicate with others and cope with changing circumstances.

Literacy Skill Training – Providing avenues for literacy activities such as letter and number recognition, value and monetary skills, vocabulary definitions, word pronunciation and enunciation, verbal and nonverbal communication strategies and American Sign Language communications

The Coordinator models supported decision making to help clients develop skills and knowledge to increase their level of independence in employment situations. 

Services may include specific programming for clients at a common path of their employment journey or for common work types (ie odd jobs).

2.         Staff Engagement and Retention

The Coordinator assists with staff engagement and communication, training, scheduling and implementing best practices. The Coordinator assist staff in their understanding of the policies and procedures to guide service to clients.

3.         Advocacy

The Coordinator assists with advocating for clients including but not limited to:

  • Working with employers and other partners to create opportunities
  • Attending meetings and appointments with clients
  • Providing information and research regarding client needs
  • Seeking out ideas and options to assist each client with their inclusion and independence in learning and employment settings.

4.         Administration

The Coordinator assists with administration including but not limited to reporting, documentation, materials management, records management, and safety protocols. This also includes

  • calculating monthly payment for clients
  • tracking attendance
  • ensuring minor maintenance of spaces used by STSE
  • administering contracts and other employment arrangements/relationships. 

The Coordinator also leads the administrative side of the Odd Jobs Squad – bookings, scheduling and billings.

5.         Other Duties as Assigned

The Coordinator will be required to carry out other duties related to Skills Training and Supported Employment or Inclusion NWT, as assigned by the Executive Director.

Values, Skills and Abilities

The Skills Training and Supported Employment Coordinator requires experience, knowledge and skills ideally achieved through a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field. This is combined with at least three years of relevant experience. A strong background in serving people with disabilities is highly beneficial. Equivalencies will be considered.

The position requires an understanding of Inclusion NWT’s mission and an ability to communicate and advocate an inspired vision of inclusion in all parts of an individual’s life.

The Coordinator should have the following:

Ability to support adults with disabilities to live safely and with dignity in homes of their own

Ability to work collaboratively with team members

Ability to support delivery of service

Good organizational, communication and time management skills

Ability to adapt to change and problem solve

Ability to manage crisis in a calm and confident manner

The following certifications are required or preferred:

Valid class 5 driver’s license  (required)

Successful criminal records check   (required)

First Aid/CPR certification   (required)

Non-violent Crisis Intervention Certification (preferred)

Position Title:           Coordinator, Information and Networking Hub

Report to:                  Executive Director

Purpose and Scope of the Position

Inclusion NWT is a non-profit organization providing services to individuals with intellectual, developmental and other disabilities and their families, assisting them in living meaningful lives in supportive communities.

Individuals with disabilities and their families need access to different types of information and engagement with others in a similar place at various points in their lives. The Information and Networking Hub provides a gathering space for information and people. The Coordinator provides information, a chance to share experiences, and activities to encourage increased inclusion of individuals with disabilities and their families in all aspects of community life.

The scope of the hub’s resources and outreach are driven by needs identified by individuals with disabilities and their families/support circles.  Services include family support and information sessions; social networking opportunities for teens and young adults with disabilities and training, transition information, tools for supporting healthy pregnancy and early childhood and more. The Coordinator ensures that families have access to current, accurate information that will support decisions about services, activities and funding available for individuals and their families.

The Coordinator also works with the Manager, Respite and Personal Supports to provide outreach services to help individuals with disabilities and their families navigate other systems, particularly in governments and Jordan’s Principle applications. 

The Coordinator identifies opportunities to raise awareness in the community and liaises with other community agencies with an interest or involvement in supports for those with disabilities.

The Coordinator is responsible for ensuring that all service offerings are delivered in a timely and respectful manner and are consistent with Inclusion NWT’s philosophy.This includes the consistent application of a philosophy that supports the independence of each client by not doing for them but doing with them.

The Coordinator carries out all administrative responsibilities for the service.

The Coordinator works closely with other Inclusion NWT staff to provide the best fit of services and consistency for client service.

Key Responsibilities

1.         Information and social networks

The Coordinator is responsible for developing and offering information and social networks for individuals and families including:

  • Planning and facilitating Family Networking Group gatherings in a variety of formats
  • Creating and facilitating other groups as deemed appropriate including teen and young adult groups
  • Developing and implementing information sharing opportunities for individuals and families
  • Offering access to in-house resources and ensuring those resources meet the needs of families and individuals
  • Assisting families in an advocacy role as requested by supporting, advising, and preparing families before, during and/or after meetings, keeping the family’s interests in the forefront
  • Researching and advising families of upcoming workshops, conferences, and other information opportunities
  • Maintain contact with participants
  • Coordinating promotion with the Communications and Administrative Officer

2.         Life transition information and assistance

The Coordinator provides information and assistance to individuals and families at key life milestones including:

  • Developing annual/semi-annual healthy pregnancy/healthy early childhood campaigns
  • Planning and implementing activities that promote inclusion at various life stages
  • Conducting research in support of service gaps or areas identified as challenges or opportunities
  • Providing information and support for families working with IEPs in the school system and in the process of transitions between various levels of schooling
  • Sharing information about options around the transition from high school to adulthood in the areas of education, living options and employment
  • Researching and sharing best practices in all aspects of life transitions for individuals with disabilities
  • Liaising with co-workers, families, partners and stakeholders as required
  • Implementing activities which provide information as identified by families.  Such activities may include, but are not limited to, workshops, discussion groups, and information pamphlets

3.         Outreach and Advocacy

Jointly with the Manager, Respite and Personal Supports, the Coordinator is responsible for providing outreach and advocacy for clients including but not limited to:

  • Providing one on one support for individuals with disabilities including assistance with paperwork and supporting as requested in meetings and appointments with third parties
  • On a client’s request, contacting other agencies and professionals concerning issues relating to a client
  • Following up on behalf of clients with other agencies
  • Providing information and research regarding client needs
  • Helping with documentation, forms and applications to various governments and agencies
  • Seeking out ideas and options to assist each client with their inclusion and independence
  • Facilitate referrals to other community services
  • Liaise with other Yellowknife community agencies to identify and support and to make referrals

4.         Administration

The Coordinator is responsible for managing all administration including quarterly reports, incident reports, participant files and external/internal reporting.

5.         Other Duties as Assigned

The Coordinator will be required to carry out other duties related to the Information and Networking Hub or Inclusion NWT, as assigned by the Executive Director.
